THE MIKE LEIGH APPROACH TO BUILDING CHARACTER
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
This course will explore devising and developing a character from the inside out, informed by Mike Leigh’s approach to working. Actors will be given a specific moment in time to research and create a character.
Over the weeks we will delve deep into who these characters are using writing, movement, improvisation and psychological gesture to bring the characters to life. The end will result will see you writing your own monologues for the characters which will be directed and recorded.
Course length: 5 weeks, 1 hour a week with some work to do in-between sessions

The workshop would benefit anyone wanting to create their own work, as well as discovering an approach that will deepen your connection to character.
You will get an opportunity to develop your own writing skills
A new approach that will lead to greater understanding of yourself and character
A place to play and explore the voice and the body
Confidence in improvising
Notepad and paper, comfortable clothes, a creative approach to the work! Before the first seasion, the students will be given a task to research a moment from the time 1981-1982, you will be given some films and events to help start you off, and you will be expected to come to class with an idea of a character and an event from that period that shaped them.

NAOMI WARING
Naomi is a writer and Director with a background in Acting. Her films have won awards at BAFTA qualifying festivals, and she has had commissions from BBC N.I, Victim support, the Lyric Hammersmith, and The Roundhouse. She is currently a visiting lecturer at GSA and Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Naomi is also shadowing, director Alex Winkler on his HTV Drama Mary and George starring Julian Moor and is currently developing her first feature and is in pre-production for her next short film Drifters.
